AN UPDATE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM, INNOVATION & SPORT

What does Queensland’s tourism future look like? Have your say!

The Tourism Industry Reference Panel has now released a discussion paper to start the conversation and understand how Queensland can design the future of the state’s multi-billion-dollar tourism sector.

Your input is needed on the opportunities you see and the barriers we will need to overcome to position Queensland for success after COVID-19. Feedback will help to identify the actions government and industry will take through a new Action Plan for Tourism Recovery.

To say the last year has been difficult would be an understatement – 11.3 million less visitors travelled to and within Queensland in 2020, representing a loss of $12.3 billion in overnight visitor expenditure.

“Tourism businesses, employees and customers, their attitudes and outlook, have changed in response to the pandemic and we, as an industry, will need to change further to be successful in the coming decade,” the paper states.

“It’s at the very least a reset and quite possibly a transformational time for Queensland tourism.”

The Panel is working hand in hand with industry to understand and reshape the future of the visitor economy in Queensland and identify the actions needed to achieve this.

The discussion paper describes Queensland’s tourism past, highlights the changes the Panel is seeing and asks industry to share their ideas for the future. To have your say, visit GetInvolved to complete a short survey or provide a written submission.

Consultation closes Monday 28 June 2021.

The Panel was established by the Queensland Government in March 2021 to oversee development of a new Action Plan for Tourism Recovery. This is about taking a step back and looking long-term at the actions industry and government will need to take to be successful in the future.

The Panel will carefully consider all feedback and responses to the discussion paper to deliver an interim action plan in the second half of 2021 and oversee further work to deliver a final action plan by early 2022.

    Help spread the word!

The Tourism Industry Reference Panel needs your help to get the word out and encourage our industry to have their say on how we can re-imagine our tourism industry post COVID-19. They need your ideas on how to re-position our state, once again, as a market leader and global destination of choice as international travel re-starts. Feel free to share the link with your stakeholders, or even gather a few colleagues to respond to the questions or even prepare a submission.
