Hi all, the Dept of Tourism, Innovation and Sport is doing regular briefings with tourism operators and peak bodies on recovery (and setbacks).  Below are the takeaways they sent out after the meeting held on 21 April.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights, here are what we took to be the key takeaways from today:

    • While some visitors lost confidence after the Brisbane lockdown, late bookings made a difference and we have noticed a faster recovery than we did after January
    • Airports continue to build their capacity and Queensland is being an active competitor in the market
    • The reopening of the New Zealand market this week will help boost trade after the April school holidays
    • We understand some CBD hotels and other CBD businesses are still doing it tough
    • We all understand that events help us to get people in hotels, and event attraction needs to be a focus across regions
    • Longreach is enjoying a very successful period at the moment – it’s been all hands on deck!
    • The labour shortage issue is limiting businesses’ ability to rebuild and there’s strong interest in government and industry working together on practical initiatives to get more workers into tourism and hospitality jobs
    • It’s important for our messaging to remain positive to shore up consumer confidence and share the sense of possibility
